Go Down Moses here commemorates "Bloody Sunday" when, 56 years ago, John Lewis and his fellow peaceful activists tried to cross the Edmund Pettus Bridge. This lead to The Voting Bill of 1965. HR 1 helps guarantee that ALL votes will be counted. The Equality Act further guarantees that ALL of us will be free from discrimination.
John Lewis was nearly killed on that day by police brutality. The George Floyd Justice in Policing Act protects us ALL from police brutality. These 3 bills have passed in The House, and are stalled in The Senate. As Heather McGhee's new book "The Sum of Us" shows in detail, these amendments help ALL of us. Isn't it time to rename The Edmond Pettus Bridge after John Lewis, instead of after a Grand Master of the K.K.K.? Now IS the time to decide whether we are a democracy or not. "If one person lives in slavery, then all are not free."
"Go Down Moses" arr. DEW, is here performed by tenor, Christopher Aaron Smith,
with pianist, Yelena Birayeva and Boston Metro Opera. Peace and justice to us all!
