Purple Beard

Purple Beard is a cabaret singer and composer. His seven evening anthology musical: "The Out of Body Adventures of Jo the Bagger," is the longest music theater work ever written. At once comedic, philosophic, in-your-face and silly; it includes around 28 musicals (see pop-up below for complete listings). "Pinocchio" (later: "Gaynocchio" (see pop-up below) was commissioned and performed by The North Shore Civic Ballet; and The Putnam Court Musicians. "Phone Sex" was shown at "Mobius" in a show of works that had been censored. "Phone Sex" also was a finalist, in The Hometown USA Film and Video Competition. "Confessions of a Fat Slut" was shown, very informally, at The Ramrod in Boston, MA. |
"Scrooge" and "Peter Pan" were commissioned and performed by "Primetime for Kids"at Massasoit College in Brockton, MA. Selections from "Alice in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking-Glass" were heard on public radio (WGBH Boston) as sung by Ben Sears, with pianist, Brad Connor; and selections from "Peter Crocodile" and "Sex Mystery" were heard on WHRB as sung by by Jeanie Theoharris with pianist Purple Beard.
Before age 12, Purple Beard supposedly wrote 250 rock songs, but this number is highly questionable as many of the songs are lost. However, Purple Beard was a singer and guitarist for two rock groups: The Pigeons and The Muskrats. FYI, he didn't have a beard (purple or otherwise) at that time!
Purple Beard's weird poems, stories and erotic drawings were featured in Fag Rag # 25 (including cover) & # 26 under the name Tiresias. Tiresias separated two copulating snakes and as a punishment was condemned to alternate time as a man and a woman. As a child Purple Beard was a transgender female (that is M to F); Currently, he is a happily and legally married gay cisgender male. We'll see what the next life brings!
Purple Beard is also a third degree Alexandrian Witch, a long time Unitarian, and vegetarian. Religious freedom, animal rights; pacifism; gender and orientation tolerance; "racial" equality (in quotes because there is currently only one race of humans on earth)... are central issues to Purple Beard's works.
Purple Beard's father had jet black hair and a red beard. Could this perhaps the reason for the purple beard: perhaps as a mutation of the Neanderthal gene for red hair? (Or is it a mix of organic henna and indigo enhanced by black coffee and red balsamic vinegar?) Let's just say that it's an unsolved mystery!
