Blog 1. Ian Shanahan said that I am a "young fogey" who writes in a style that went out in my great grand-father's time (or something like that). I will remind him that J. S. Bach wrote in the style of Pachelbel, at a time when his sons had already embrassed the new "Classical Style" that was all the rage. Let's exlore this question further. It seems to me that the stylistic hodge podge that is 20th & 21st century classical music boils down to three styles: 1. late Romaniticsm 2. 12-tone serialism and the so called "Avante Garde" and 3. Minimalism. Each of these have their own rules and parameters. I don't follow any of these rules, and as a result I have been alternately accepted and rejected by each faction. I am not clear as to what Mr. Shanahan believes to be the new kid on the block and what he regards as yesterday's dinner. Except that I know that he considers me be to be the later. I would advise listeners o follow my daily posts on any number of classical music groups or visit my website: http://davidedgarwlather.com lots of my music can be heard there. You can make up your own mind.
