Happy Birthday, Michael Belle

I became friends with Michael Belle when we worked on Edward II together.  He was Gaveston, and I was Edward for the recording.  He said the key to our success was that he became addicted to my omelets.  It would be difficult to find another tenor who could sing the role:  it goes from an A below the C that is the lowest tenor note, all the way up to the D# an enharmonic minor third above the high C that is the standard top of the tenor range.  His brilliant, ringing voice sang these notes, and everything in between, with both the terrifying rage and sublime vulnerability that the role requires. I wish he was still here in Boston, but The Chicago Lyric and, more importantly, The San Francisco Opera also recognize his brilliance.  Happy birthday, my friend.  You can hear one of his solos from Edward II by clicking on his picture, or the cake to the left.  You can hear his entire performance of Edward II in Tableaux I-III with the button below:

Today, May 22; is Jim Spellman's birthday.  Before all this craziness with Covid-19 we used to give large parties.  Jim would always how everyone a dance on which he had been working. Then he would pick someone from the group and they would dance.  Then he'd pick someone else.  He is a man in motion, a true dancer and choreographer.

Today is my mother's birthday. She was an amazing singer. When I was playing in the sand and water at Good Harbor Beach in Gloucester, MA with my friends. I remember when she used to call me from one side of the beach...  I could hear her lovely sweet soprano voice from anywhere across the huge beach, and I was embarrassed, thinking that everyone would think that my mother was calling me.  Then I realized, that no one knew for whom the "yoo who" was calling....  suddenly, the lovely melody was just for me and her. By clicking the red button below you can hear her performance of Paratum cor meum, by Heinrich Schütz, performed by my mother,  Janet Wheeler, soprano with The Telemann Society chorus and orchestra under Richard Schultze.
Happy Birthday, Mom; I love you, Dave.
